PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN’S UNDERSTANDING OF FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIVE SPEECH OF POETIC TEXTS

Abstract

The problem of children’s understanding of literary works contents has been studied by psychologists (L. Gurovich, O. Zaporozhets, I. Zimnyaya, G. Kostyuk, B. Teplov and others) and pedagogues (N. Babich, A. Bogush, N. Vetlugina, N. Gavrish, D. Dubovis-Aranovska, S. Chemortan and others). The peculiarities of preschool-aged children’s understanding of figurative expressive speech of poetic texts were the subject of investigations initiated by these scientists: Ye. Amateva, S. Bukhvostova, N. Gavrish, B. Golovin, S. Zhupanin, R. Zhukovska, N. Kirsta, V. Leibson, S. Kregzhd, A. Polozova, Yu. Rudenko and others. Poetry is considered to be a verbal artistic creation, an art of artistic reflection of reality in verbal images; literary works written in the form of poems, rhythmical speech. Expressive speech is understood as a communicative quality of person’s speech culture embodying it with figurativeness and emotional colouring, influencing communicants’ emotions and feelings, it maintains attention and interest. Figure is a specific for literature and art perceptual form of reality reflection with the help of figurative use of words. Figurative speech is one of the features of expressive speech which enables evoking of visual-sensitive associations in listeners’ imagination. Academician G. Kostyuk studied the process of understanding in Ukrainian Psychology. The scientist regards understanding as an active cognitive activity, reflection of objects and phenomena of objective reality including existing connections and relations in person’s consciousness. Preschool-aged children’s understanding of figurative and expressive speech of poetic texts is performed in two stages: a) children’s understanding of the content of a poem; b) content understanding with the help of figurative speech and expressive means. An educator, being good at speech culture, figurativeness and expressive reading of poems by children with their further analysis in particular, fulfills a special role in children’s understanding of figurativeness of poetic texts.
