Research progress on potential brain targets of physical therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder

Journal Title: Journal of Air Force Medical University - Year 2023, Vol 44, Issue 11

Abstract

Post-traumatic stress disorder ( PTSD) is a kind of mental illness that seriously threatens individual health and survival. A large number of studies have found that the abnormal state of specific brain regions is an important cause of the core symptoms of PTSD. These abnormal brain regions include areas with abnormal functional states, such as amygdala, and areas with abnormal connectivity, such as ventromedial prefrontal cortex. Since physical therapy can act on specific brain regions and cause changes in their functional status or connectivity status, the brain regions with abnormal status in PTSD patients can be used as potential brain targets for physical therapy of the core symptoms of PTSD. Currently, some brain targets have been used in physical therapy for PTSD, such as dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and some are still under theoretical study, such as insular cortex. The purpose of this study is to summarize the brain regions with abnormal function or abnormal connectivity related to the core symptoms of PTSD, so as to provide targets for subsequent physical therapy of PTSD.
