SEMANTIC PROCESSES OF CREATING CULTURAL LINGUISTIC REPRESENTATIONS OF SPACE IN THE BRITISH AND AMERICAN VARIANTS OF ENGLISH

Abstract

The article іs devoted to the semantic processes in creating the British and American cultural linguistic representa- tions of the functionally-semantic field of space. It is aimed at investigating the principal ways and means of forming variations of the said representations and their role in the functional differenсiation of English. Semantic paradigmes enlarging takes place in the field internal semantic processes of transfunctionality, transseman- ticity (stylistic, territorial variativity, resemantization etc.), toponymization and contextualization, as well as in transfield semantic processes of homonymization and borrowing. The processes of transsemanticity and transfunctionality show the interdependence of grammatical form, language function and notional or conceptual meaning of the word. Conversing prepositions, adverbs, adjectives and verbs into nouns transforms their grammatical meanings into that of noun, chang- ing the indicative function into nominal, thus endows the word with complete space semantics. The reverse process reveals the loss of space meaning. Semantic paradigmes deminishing occurs as a result of space names aging and their functional differenciation. These processes produce the assymetry of the American and British semantic paradigmes which is com- pensated by the dominants and borowings. Transsemanticity and transfunctionality may engage cultural linguistic func- tion in creating toponyms. Cultural linguistic function creates also territorial lexico-semantic variants of space nouns. Semantic paradige internal processes of narrowing, enlarging, metaphorization etc. demonstrate the development of derivatives, incomplete notional, connotative and stylistic synonyms – formal units, accompanied by semantic differenci- ation, exаmplified by British and American space names analogues-divergents which are motivated by pragmatic factors and associative processes. Conversives and non-space nouns increase metaphorical semantics of toponyms. In the context of the sentence the explicit or implicit personality actualize the indicatory function of space names.
