SEMANTIC STRUCTURE OF ‘SPACE’ IN ENGLISH AND UKRAINIAN

Abstract

This research paper is dedicated to the issues of modern cognitive linguistics, with the study of conceptualization, i.e. subjective perception of basic cognitive domains of space, time, motion etc. by the speakers of various natural languages, being one of its major schools. The focus here is on the specific aspects of conceptualization of the ‘space’ domain, which, according to previous research, correlate with structural features of respective languages. The subject-matter of our research is the peculiar features of conceptualization of the ‘space’ domain by the native speakers of English and Ukrainian. Thus, the purpose of our investigation is the comparative analysis of Eng. space and Ukr. простір. To achieve this purpose, we set to analyze the definitions of both terms given in the Oxford Dictionary of English and the Comprehensive Dictionary of Modern Ukrainian respectively. Based on the language material sourced from the British National Corpus and the Corpus of the Ukrainian language, the lexical concepts in the semantic structures of these terms have been revealed by means of the lexical concepts and cognitive models methodology. The comparative analysis of the lexical concepts allows to identify more common, than distinct, semantic features of Eng. space and Ukr. простір. To the common features there refer such lexical concepts as DIMENSIONS, EXPANSION, FINITENESS and INFINITY. The difference has been found in the semantic structure of Ukr. простір, namely – the concept of PLANE, which is not peculiar to Eng. space. Based on the data obtained, the conclusion about general similarity in conceptualizations related to Eng. space and Ukr. простір, and the corresponding ideas of space as an abstract category has been drawn. The research perspectives in this field have been outlined.
