THEORETICAL PROBLEMS OF MILITARY TRANSLATION IN WORLD TRANSLATION STUDIES
Journal Title: Науковий вісник Херсонського державного університету. Серія: “Лінгвістика” - Year 2018, Vol 34, Issue 2
Abstract
The concept of military translation belongs to the basic units of the military translation theory’s conceptual construct that require proper systematization and clarification. One of the tasks of the theory of military translation as a special theory of translation studies is to clarify the role and place of the theory of military translation in the system of translatology. The author analyzes the results of the translation theory open sources research within the period of 1960-2017 to determine the state of the military translation theoretical development in the world (European, American, Asian, Eastern, etc.) translatological studies. According to the presented analysis, authoritative scientific bibliographic databases (e.g. US Library of Congress, Library of UK dissertations, WorldCat, etc.) do not objectively generate relevant scientific sources for search fields “military translation” and “military translator”. Likewise, recognized comprehensive encyclopedias and reputable reference books on translation studies do not have specialized articles on/about military translation. Moreover, they do not even mention military translation as a term, notion or concept. The analysis of the open access bibliographic domain also shows the absence of individual and organizational research papers or studies on the theory of military translation in the European, American, Asian, and Eastern translatological schools. However, some aspects of the military translation theory, which deal with the translator/interpreter’s professional activity, are partially or implicitly represented in numerous international interdisciplinary (historiographical, sociolinguistic, cultural, geopolitical, etc.) studies, where they plays secondary roles.
