SYMBOLICITY OF TOPONYMS IN POETICAL TEXT (BASED ON THE MATERIAL OF POETRY BY G.G. BYRON)

Abstract

The article investigates the functional loading, the features of the symbolic use of toponyms in G. G. Byron's poetry, reveals the stylistic importance of toponyms, their symbolism, the outline of the territory that is the object of the depiction in the lyric works of the artist. The considered toponyms serve as a capacious and laconic language-linguistic device that instantly changes time and space, the past and the present, real and conditional, embodying the creative idea of the artist. Toponyms in the analyzed poetic writings by G.G. Byron create a vivid metaphorically-shaped context with their unique flickering of symbolic meanings, concentrating the content of poetry. It is argued that toponyms are a very precise and economical way of presenting history, shifting time sheets, performing textural, expressive, symbolic and expressive-aesthetic functions. A symbol is known to be a substantive or verbal sign, which indirectly expresses the essence of a certain phenomenon. A toponym is endowed with a property stored in the memory of people as a certain plot, which makes it possible for its function in the text as a symbol. Due to this property, the toponym, getting into the text thanks to the skill of the author, deepens the general idea of the text and organizes the artistic whole of the poetic text and contributes to the reader's perception. It is precisely the toponyms that form the geographical space - the place, the time of certain events. By G. Byron created symbolic poetic speech with the help of toponyms in the context of his romantic works, unique, in spite of the wide cultural ties, analogies and associations of geographical names.
