Sms- and mms-messages as a new genre variety of epistolary style
Journal Title: Scientific journal «International Journal of Philology» - Year 2015, Vol 1, Issue 225
Abstract
SMS- and ММS-messages as new genres of epistolary style are discussed in the article. Morphological features of the mentioned above texts are analysed. The frequency of use of different parts of speech are determined. The author analyses syntactical features of messages. As a result of the analysis of morphological features of message texts we have to mention that the most commonly used parts of speech are verbs, then nouns and pronouns. Adjectives and numerals are used less often. Nouns are most often used for calling addressees and they are also forms of address. An adjective is the least commonly used part of speech. Almost all adjectives, which are met in messages are qualitative, less often – relative. Verbs are met in messages most often, since the addresser has to force the addressee if not to a certain action, then at least to a response. Therefore verbs are most often used in an imperative mood, much rarer – active and a subjunctive mood is not almost used. Pronouns comprise about 16% of the whole message text and are also the most common. They are used for avoiding tautologies in the text. The modern stage of development of the spoken Ukrainian language, indisputably, has influenced the messages and their lexical features. In the SMS - and ММS- message texts one can meet the slang words (cool, OK). That of is why, SMS - and ММS-messages have features specific for epistolary style and its most widespread genre – a letter. They also have some features that allow us to talk about a new epistolary genre, which emerged separately.
