Statistical methods for evaluation of hybrids and their parental lines on the basis of a series of unreplicated experiments with standards

Journal Title: Rośliny Oleiste - Oilseed Crops - Year 2010, Vol 31, Issue 2

Abstract

The methods of statistical evaluation of hybrids and their parental forms on the basis of the analysis of a series of unreplicated experiments with standards are presented. The statistical methods applied have been based on a mixed model analysis of a series of experiments with the same genotypes conducted in incomplete block designs in different environments (see Kaczmarek 1986). Incomplete block designs can be used in experiments in which hybrids obtained from different crossing schemes, in particular from line × tester scheme, are compared. The line × tester crossing system, as an expanded top-cross system used frequently in practice, is of interest for breeders dealing with estimation and testing of interesting breeding parameters. In a series of unreplicated experiments with the line × tester hybrids, the statistical analysis of incomplete block designs can be used for estimating and hypothesis testing of general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining ability effects of parental lines on the basis of the analysis of their hybrids. It can be also applied to studying of the interaction of GCA and SCA effects with environments. The application of the method described above is illustrated with the data from a series of winter oilseed rape experiments, in which one systematic standard, Californium (open pollinated cultivar), and two random standards, Hercules (hybrid) and Castille (open pollinated cultivar), were replicated and 90 hybrids (including 54 line MS × restorer hybrids) were unreplicated.
