STEREOTYPE MAPPING OF HUMAN AGE CONCEPT IN MIND OF UKRАINIAN, RUSSIAN AND ENGLISH NATIVE SPEAKERS

Abstract

The article deals with the interpretation of such notions as “prototype”, “stereotype” and “concept” in cognitive linguistics. By means of an example of the basic HUMAN AGE concept of the Ukrainian, Russian and English conceptual picture of the world there are defined characteristic for representatives of the specified ethnic groups national-cultural age stereotypes that are reflected on the lexical-phraseological level. Archaic ideas about age as a measure of human existence are considered and the reasons for their occurrence are formulated. The content of proverbs and sayings that verbalize the HUMAN AGE concept are analyzed to determine archetypal and stereotypical notions about the time of human life. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of metaphorical and metonymic models of this concept. This formulation of the question is important due to the thesis of cognitive linguistics about the strong link between the conceptual system presented in the language mapping of the world and the physical and cultural experience of man and society. The prototypical structure of the concept is defined as experience of the linear-cyclic course of time (motion along the straight line and circular rotation). The human age is described as a stratification category: age classes and groups are differentiated and categorized. The rules of human behavior, rights, formal and informal norms of life in society according to age status are established, formal and informal age norms and stereotypes (negative, posi- tive and neutral) are analyzed. It is discovered that one of the main conceptual metaphors of the concept is the representation of periods of human life through the seasons. The associations of changes in age stages with the change of seasons are determined by such cosmological and natural cycles as natural annual and daily cycles (summer, winter, evening time), which became the basis of the analogy between the natural annual cycle and the life cycle as a “time natural” period of human life.
