Abstract

This contribution will focus on the role of topical reference in the resolution of ambiguous anaphoric relations from a competition between several antecedents, potential candidates for the same anaphoric marker. We will try to demonstrate, on the basis of specific criteria, the management of anaphoric pronouns in classic French compared to the modern French suggests using other interpretative process, besides the proximity criterion which faults occur when several antecedents competitors, all having the same status topical, presenting for the same anaphoric pronoun. We also try to classify competitors referents according to their degree of topicality in the statement. This classification, in terms of topical referent will result in the majority of cases in the correct reference. That is, we propose, in the context of this contribution, a contrastive study of pronominal reference in classic French and modern French, based on documented examples of sentences that reflect the freedom in the repository operation of anaphoric pronouns.
