Study of antihypertensive agents in rural areas by the community pharmacists

Abstract
The aim of this research work is to study whether the usage of antihypertensive drugs is followed by mono therapy, combined therapy or multiple therapy in rural areas. For this individual data of Hypertensive patients as per their Name, age, Sex, Height, Weight, BMI, Sedentary habits like alcohol, smoking, previous allergies, any co-morbidities, other treatment and current medication were collected. A count of approximately 700 individuals in two Villages were considered and their details in the patient case sheet were recorded. It was found that 108 individuals using adhered to the physician’s prescription and found that they were suffering with other comorbidities like Diabetes mellitus, Rheumatoid arthritis, hyper acidity and post-menopausal disorders. A detailed description categorizing patients separately pertaining to their respective age group, gender, co-morbidities, mono therapy, combined therapy, multiple therapy was prepared. Further tabular forms and graphical representation was made for drugs categorically (whether they are CCBS, ARBS, ACE inhibitors, Alpha blockers, Beta blockers, diuretics and Central sympatholytics). It was observed that out of 108 patients a - 68 male patients and 40 female patients suffered withCo-morbidities-Diabetes, Rheumatoid, PMP and Hyperacidity. In case of Monotherapy-Males-56 and females-30, & In Combined therapy-Males-16, females-6 with the usage of Tab.Enlapril-8, Losartan-12, Losar-H-15, Amlodipine-30, Amlo-At-2, Nifedipine-3 Atenolol-19, Metaprolol-19. Out of 108 patients half of them were found to be illiterate & naïve. They should be counseled against alcohol, smoking, obese and other risk factors for HTN. Poor medical services prone to irregular monitoring of BP in patients, unavailability of Physician services, lack of knowledge with HTN & other co-morbidities. -Continuous usage of Beta blockers effects the production of Insulin from Islets of langerhans of pancreas may be leads to Diabetes mellitus. Some patients were suffering from Rheumatoid arthritis and are using analgesics leads to excessive secretion of HCL damages mucous membrane of stomach leads to peptic and duodenal ulcers. Prolonged usage of antacids lead to constipation.88 individuals are on monotherapy and 20 are on combined therapy. Majority of patients were using Tab. Amlodipine Besylate followed by others such as Metaprolol, Losar-H, Atenolol, Losartan, Enlapril maleate, Nifedipine and least usage is Amolodipine + atenolol.
