Journal Title: Слов’янський збірник - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 21
Abstract
The object of the research is the relevant problems of literary onomastics, a science that was initiated in the previous century in the works of such famous Ukrainian and Russian scholars as S. Zimin, V. Kalinkin, Y. Karpenko, O. Supersan, O. Foniakiak and many others. The subject is the symbolic significance of myths in the poetic texts of the famous authors of Russian literature of the 18th century: A. Cantemir, V. Trediakovskii and M. Lomonosov. The main purpose of the study is to describe the symbolic meaning of the heroes of Greek and Roman mythology, which are now preserved only in reference journals and they are unknown to the modern reader. The methodological basis in our work is the ideas of Yu. Karpenko and V. Kalinkin concerning the understanding of the term poetonym. The methods of cognitive and cultural interpretation, based on real knowledge as mental entities about the bearer of a certain name were used in our research. Thus, it can be concluded that: 1. all poetonyms have their own meaning; 2.these meanings are often symbolic; 3. it is possible to make transformations within the limits of symbolic meanings, caused by the author's connotations, which are added to the main meanings of the poetonyms.
