SYNTACTIC STRUCTURES OF MODIFICATION IN ENGLISH TESTAMENTARY DISCOURSE

Abstract

The article deals with syntactic structures of modification in English testamentary discourse. The structure of the modification consists of two constituents H + M, where H is the main component, and M is a modifier. Subordination is a type of connection between components, and a main component defines the form of a modifier. The aim of the article is to investigate syntactic structures of modification in English testamentary discourse. To achieve the goal one should complete the following tasks: 1) to analyse the notion of syntactic structures of modification and 2) to single out syntactic structures of modification in English Last Wills and Testaments. The subject of the paper is syntactic structures of modification in English testamentary discourse. Study materials are based on 400 English Last Wills and Testaments conducted between 1837 and 2015. There is no single approach to the notion of syntactic structures. U. Francis first introduced this concept in 1958 and developed the theory of syntactic structures. He singled out four main types: structure of predication, structure of comple- mentation, structure modification and structure of coordination. A. Korsakov studied this problem among the domestic scientists. He used the term syntactic structure to analyze a simple sentence in Modern English. As any language unit syntactic structures refer through the mind of the speaker and listener to something in the objective world, including man. The scientist notes that a structure of modification consists of a head or a constituent modified and its modifier. Such constructions are also called headed or endocentric. They have the same function as one of their immediate constituents. M. Mirchenko, O. Obrazcova, O. Selivanova and O. Khromchenko greatly contributed to the study. The analysis of Last Wills and Testaments made it possible to conclude that adjectives are used as modifiers the most Mart + H (28%), then prepositional phrase H + Prep + Mnoun (19%), complex multicomponent models (18.7%), the numerals Mnum + H (14%), the other noun H + Vnoun (12.5%) and a combination of participle said + noun and parti- ciple said + first and last name (7.8%).
