Tendencies of developing functional semantics of cultural linguistic representations of space in the British and American variants of English.

Abstract

The article іs devoted to the functioning of the British and American cultural linguistic representations of the functionally-semantic field of space in the contexts of different functional styles of English. So, the aim of the article is to establish the ways and means of developing space nominations semantic changes. The scientific importance of the article is connected with the complex, polyparadygmatic investigation that reveals the development of scientific knowledge. The conception that is put forward – ” technial and scientific progress, polyethnicity and generic cultures are interconnected in the functioning of the British and American cultural linguistic nominations of space“. The origin of the American variant of English from the British variant explains common tendencies of developing British and American cultural linguistic space representations: synthetical and analytical processes, semantic changes: homonymic transformations tending to monocemanticity in the functional contexts for the purpose of distinguishing professional terms, actualization of the primary nonspace meanings in centripetal functionally-semantic processes resulting in territorial lacunas, as well as forming apellatives from the nouns of other functionally-semantic fields in centrifugal semantic processes; borrowings, tendency to aging egocentric semantics and developing social meanings in lexics, toponymization of general nouns, forming semantic chains of toponyms-derivatives etc. American cultural linguistic representations reveal the tendency to professional and metaphoric associative semantics and their British equivalents differ in more subjective, sensory semantics. So, global integration processes, verbalized in the territorial cultural linguistic representations of space on the morphological, lexical and syntactic level, prevail over the diverging processes.
