The Effect of Postmodern Consumption Habits on the Perception of Beauty

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of postmodern consumption habits on the perception of beauty. The study was carried out according to the general survey model, which is a type of quantitative research. The sample group of the study consists of 409 individuals over the age of 18 residing in Turkey. The data collected online between July and December 2022 were obtained through Google Forms. 21 questions of the questionnaire, which consists of 4 parts, are about measuring media use and daily life habits, and 7 of them are diagnostic questions about demographic information. The questions prepared to measure the perception of personal beauty with 11 questions and the perception of ideal beauty with 22 questions were created using a 5-point Likert scale. According to the ideal beauty perception scale used in the research, it was determined that the expressions with the highest average score were “I find women who do sports and diet and eat healthy more beautiful and attractive” and “I find women and men with beautiful teeth more beautiful and attractive”. The expressions with the lowest average score are; It has been determined that "men with tattoos are more handsome and attractive" and "I find women with full lips more beautiful". When the expressions of the personal beauty perception scale are evaluated; It was determined that the expressions with the highest average score were “I like my eyes and eyebrows” and “I like my lips”, while the expressions “I like my skin” and “I am satisfied with my weight” have the lowest average scores.
