THE FUNCTIONING OF TEMPORAL CONJUNCTIONS IN MIDDLE HIGH GERMAN COMPLEX SENTENCES

Abstract
Modern historical linguistics faces a number of disputable issues connected with formation, development and functioning of certain lingual units. Thus, the question arises about the nature of complex sentence in German from the historical perspective, and the role of conjunctions in particular. The paper focuses on functioning of temporal conjunctions in Middle High German complex sentences within the general context of language changes, namely, the process of grammaticalization when the original meaning of the language unit is being neutralized, and a new meaning is being developed on this basis. In particular, the analysis of most freuently used temporal conjunction dö, as well as other markers illustrating temporal simultaneity and succession of the events has been made. Such analysis proved the existence of several word order patterns in the mentioned period, one of them tending to modern German sentence structure, the other being characterized by structural variation. The author states the fact that in Middle High German conjunctions with narrow specified meanings started to develop, though some of them still preserve their polifuctionality. Moreover, the more abstract the meaning of the conjunction was, the more possibilities to realize the sentence semantics were. In general, the system of conjunctions in complex sentences in this period is developing thus making the word order sentence-pattern closer to the norms of modern German.
