THE MAJOR WAYS OF RENDERING THE SEMANTIC AND COGNITIVE ELEMENTS OF UKRAINIAN REALIA IN THE SCHOLARLY PUBLICATIONS

Abstract
In the article the major ways of rendering the semantic and cognitive elements incipient in the Ukrainian social and political terms of distant and recent past in the scholarly publications are considered. The paper analyses the major ways and communicative strategies of rendering the nationally colored terminological and other conceptually meaningful elements of the historical scholarly discourse. The distinctive features of the Ukrainian national culture are well perceived against the background of the internationally recognized terms that are extensively used by the translators and the authors of the English publications about Ukraine as a means of explaining the basic referential meanings of the transcribed or calqued original units. Communicative interpretation of the source language term and its contextual implications depends very much on the profound analysis of the national conceptual system which is generally recognized as being intertextual and cross-genre by nature. An indispensable element of the historical scholarly discourse is the network of references to the sources and papers written by a variety of the other participants whose views are either shared or contested. Thus each text enters a kind of a hypertext which is a multilevel structure consisting of the interdependent lines of description. Therefore each translator of the historical text is concurrently a researcher investigating the cognitive potential of the conceptually relevant features of the languages that come in contact. The interconceptual theory of translation, of which the current research strives to be a part, construes the process of getting across the historico-cultural text message as a process of rediscovering or selfdiscovering by the translator of the essence of the source language text. The research demonstrated that the cognitive potential of the historico-cultural nominations is a quite diverse and variable value. It can be adequately represented in translation only through the prism of a variety of systematic links which take into account not only individual text choices and preferences, but the respective professional discourse as a whole. The combinability factor and contextual links within a given text turn out to be of primary relevance in determining the scope of national colouring of a particular term within a specific discourse. The ways of rendering Ukrainian realias greatly depend on the ethnic and cultural background of the translator or the author of the original English text and the prospective audience.
