THE ROLE OF SOUTH-EAST ASIA IN THE USA STRATEGY TOWARD CHINA

Abstract
The article deals with the problem of possible appearance China on the regional arena as a powerful force that over the next 10–15 years could increase competition between the United States of America and China in Southeast Asia and increase the potential of armed conflict. The United States is now the dominant extra-regional force in South-East Asia. Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) continue to rely on US forces to ensure regional stability and security and to balance the growing power of China. It is possible that over the next 15 years China could emerge as a more powerful and hostile competitor to the United States for regional influence and access. As a consequence, it is plausible that some of the ASEAN states, if confronted by the prospects of an aggressive and threatening China, may rely increasingly upon the United States and its military power for deterrence, reassurance, and protection. China’s geopolitical ambitions will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Southeast Asia and the U.S. military posture in the region
