THE TRADITIONAL INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC CULTURE OF UKRAINIANS OF MARAMURES COMITAT (ROMANIA)

Abstract

This article is dedicated to the traditional instrumental musical culture of the historical and geographical Maramoros area in the aspect of the ethno-cultural borderland. One should distinguish separately part of Maramoros that is now a part of Romania. This “southern” Romanian part of the investigated historical and geographic area turned out to be a continuation of the Ukrainian “northern” part traditions as per instrumental musical folklore indicators. In the territory of modern Romania, the Ukrainian community lives compactly in four historical regions of the coun- try: Maramoros (Maramures and Satu-Mare counties), Bukovina (Suceava and Botosani counties), Banat (Timiş, Kar- ash-Severin and Arad counties), Dobrudja (Tulch county). The largest number of Ukrainians lives in the Maramures and Satu-Mare counties, especially in the mountainous areas. The mountainous area contributed to the localization and preservation of the traditional Ukrainian culture. Many Hutsul families from the villages of Maramures county have their own literary works in Transcarpathian Maramaroshyn. This is the so-called Ukrainian minority of Northwest Romania. The study describes the characteristics of individual aspects of the instrumental folklore of the hutsul villages in the Roma- nian part of Maramoros. In particular, we observe the specific features of the traditional instrumental culture of the Hutsuls of the Romanian Hutsulshchyna and discover the common features of their folk instrumental tradition in comparison with the folklore of other regions of the historical and cultural community – Hutsulshchyna. Typical features are the preservation of the best examples of archaic tradition, manifested in the folk instruments, in performing traditional song and dance genres during family-day, calendar and religious holidays, ceremonies; in popularizing the music for trio ensemble. Traditional Ukrainian culture has changed. Along with the music for trio ensemble with traditional instruments (two violins and a drum; a violin, a drum, and a guitar), the modified ensembles operate using all-European instruments – accordion, button accordion.
