The Use of Leather in Turkish History and an Example in Terms of Artistic Use: İnci Eviner

Journal Title: LOKUM Sanat ve Tasarım Dergisi - Year 2023, Vol 1, Issue 2

Abstract

Mankind has used leather in many fields from the moment it was created to the present day. Firstly, he used it by producing materials such as pots and pans to protect himself from external threats, and then to sustain his life more easily. In the following periods, he expanded the area of use by including leather in all the buildings and things he lived in. While these products, which he produced, were initially expressed as crafts, he reached art by adding aesthetic concern to it. With the industrial revolution, or in other words, with the expansion of the industry, its usage area has also expanded. Leather has also made a place for itself in the field of art, and artists have included leather material in their works to strengthen their expressions. İnci Eviner was one of them. Eviner included works in which she used leather materials in her 1996 personal exhibition “Without Skin”. These works of Eviner, one of the Turkish contemporary artists, draw attention in terms of the use of leather and the meanings it ascribes, apart from traditional materials. While dealing with power, authority and male-dominated society in various forms with these works, the artist has chosen leather as the main material, which has witnessed the history of humanity. This situation allowed the material and the subject to provide semantic integrity with each other. It has been seen that İnci Eviner's biography as well as information about her works are available in various online sources, but they are not sufficiently discussed in scientific publications. In this study, it is aimed to provide a brief information about Eviner as a Turkish contemporary artist and to introduce her works, in which she uses leather, in her personal exhibition titled "Leatherless", in which she deals with the use of leather and traditionality with different materials and forms.
