THE VOCAL LYRICISM OF L. LEPKIY, M. HAYVORONSKIY, AND R. KUPCHYNSKIY IN THE PRACTICAL OF MUSICAL AND AESTHETICAL EDUCATION

Journal Title: Молодь і ринок - Year 2018, Vol 158, Issue 3

Abstract

The article focuses on the creative works by L Lepkiy, M. Hayvoronskiy, and R. Kupchynskiy in the development of Ukrainian musical culture of the first half of the 20th century – particularly focusing upon the realm of creation of the songs of the Legion of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen. The era of the Riflemen has left behind not only evidence of military and patriotic achievements and of the revival of the national consciousness and statehood of the Ukrainian nation; the awakening of the political life has also boosted the creative activity of the Ukrainian people. The Riflemen Songs quickly picked up popularity; they were being rewritten into manuscript collections and relayed orally. The Riflemen Songs were developed by a number of composers, including S. Lyudkevych, M. Verykivskiy, P. Kozytskiy, V. Barvinskiy, M. Kolessa, N. Nyzhankivskiy, Z. Lysko, A. Rudnytskiy, B. Kudryk, B. Vakhnyanyn, Ye. Kozak, M. Leontovych, M. Hayvoronskiy, and Ya. Yaroslavenko. One phenomenon in the creative activity of three Riflemen composers was the fact that they were using their own poetic works as well as contributing to each other; for instance, “Over, in Vilkhivka” (both music and lyrics co-written by R. Kupchynskiy and L. Lepkiy); “For Our Native Land” (music written by M. Hayvoronskiy and lyrics by R. Kupchynskiy); M. Hayvoronskiy’s remixes of Riflemen Songs by L. Lepkiy (“Storks”, “Tweet-Tweet”, “There Lies a Settlement”) and by R. Kupchynskiy (“Under the Blanket of the Night”). Vocal Lyricism by L. Lepkiy, M. Hayvoronskiy, and R. Kupchynskiy is very close to that of a folk song-invested with heroic pathos, lyricism, and humourism. The Riflemen Songs have become a foundation upon which the national and patriotic consciousness of the Ukrainian society has developed. Most of them have been put together for a non-broad vocal range and may thus be easily used by teachers in musical education institutions, both for individual vocal studies and for the choral singing.
