THE WRITTEN FAMILY SPEECH OF SURZHYK SPEAKERS

Abstract

This paper analyzes the written family speech of the surzhyk speakers with carrying out the following tasks: in the first place, to ascertain the genre specificity of “household” texts, and, in the second place, to characterize the ways the mixed Ukrainian-Russian speech is rendered in writing. The automatic use of the surzhyk “household language” in the family environment as in a zone of reduced social control was determined to result from the lack of linguistic competence, craving for comfort and force of habit, tradition because the surzhyk is the first code of linguistic socialization for all respondents.
