THEORETICAL PREREQUISITES OF LEVEL-BASED APPROACH TO MARITIME ENGLISH TEACHING AND LEARNING

Abstract

The future seafarers’ training standardization need is legalized in the main international maritime conventions such as STCW (International Convention on Training and Certification of Seafarers and Watchkeeping) and SOLAS (Interna- tional Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea). It is clear that the efficiency of future seafarers’ professional cooperation on board an international vessel depends on their level of Maritime English proficiency. Since there are no any recom- mendations on Maritime English proficiency level assessment, it is the matter of the International Maritime Lecturers’ Association (IMLA). The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CERF) is viewed as the basic instrument for Maritime English teaching and learning process. The contributions of the companion volume to CERF are also represented. Being updated and extended the edition provides the changes to the CERF illustrative descriptors, broadens the perspective of language education by imple- menting new aspects of language-related competence such as mediation, plurilingualism and pluriculturalism which are considered to be of utmost importance for members of the international crew. The multi-level model of communicative competence which is based on a new vision of the learner not only as a lan- guage user, but also as an active communicator in a variety of life spheres is studied. The modifications in communicative competence caused by the changes in the approach as well as the replacement of the traditional model with four language skills by the new one with four modes of communication are explored. The concept of language proficiency level as the key concept of modern theory and practice of language teaching and learning process is analyzed.
