Toxicity and Environmental Risks of Nanomaterials: Challenges and Future Needs

Journal Title: Indian Journal of Research in Pharmacy and Biotechnology - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 6

Abstract

Nanotechnology has gained a great interest due to the needs and applications of nanomaterials in many areas including agriculture, industry, medicine business and public health. The increase in the use of nanomaterials in every sector of society have resulted in uncertainities regarding environmental impacts. As nanomaterials become part of our daily life, environmental exposure to nanomaterials is inevitable and as a result, nanotoxicity research is gaining interest. Some products and applications involving nanomaterials promise advantages in the environmental and climate protection sectors Moreover, a detailed study is needed to determine the possible risks posed by the special physical and chemical properties of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs). This review presents a summary of recent research efforts on fate, behaviour and toxicity of different classes of nanomaterials in the environment. Also it focuses on critical evaluation of challenges and future needs for the safe environmental nanotechnology.
