Translator’s poetics of V. Koptilov in the space of intersubjectivity of translation interpretation

Abstract

The article deals with the conceptual poetics of a prominent Ukrainian translator, translation critic and theoretician – Victor Koptilov – through the lens of dialogism of his interpretations. It turned out that a common imagery structure unifies a set of Koptilov’s poetry translations, forming a so-called secondary intertext that centers on the conceptual metaphor about life (LIFE AS A PATH). Based on our analysis, it is singled out that the translations performed by one translator do create a certain space of intersubjectivity, i.e. a conceptual structure with a marked identity that resulted from the interplay of styles between the translators, the authors of the works he/she worked on as well as other components of target literary polysystem. In this scope, it is essential to differentiate three types of intersubjectivity, namely spatial, individual as well as code, i.e. metalingual. Each and every translator belongs to a specific national and sociocultural space that has a solid impact on the dialogue between the translator and the original author; however an individual set of values and ethics plays a decisive role in their inter-action and finds a metalingual expression in the form of the target text. In this line, the conceptual relation established between the spatial, individual and code intersubjectivity as an outcome of translator’s performance is a framework of this study. It is proved that interpretations authored by one translator create a secondary intertext.
