Work, Market, Leisure and Transgression: The port cities of the Colombian Caribbean, 1850-1930

Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2009, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

This article proposes a reading of the port world in the Colombian Caribbean region as a multifunctional space, i.e. as a collection center and mobilization of goods, a work site, a market square, a leisure, entertainment and public space and in dispute as an alternative to the central plaza. These features made it the epicenter where, among other things, urban growth and the formation of new social groups were fomented, together with a culture that integrated elements from other latitudes and excelled in the proclivity to continued transgression of the controls of the institutions and elites. The peculiarity of the ports is that the hegemony of the central square as an area of control and power was disputed by the port area, that was formed, to some extent, from the bottom up, in a more democratic way, until they were transferred to the city’s outskirts and new infrastructure separated them from other functions..
