In Brazil the young poor and black have many barriers imposed by the condition of life, making it impossible even to dream of having a social ascent via the study. Often studying is to have to opt into stop working and contributing to the income of the family. This scenario some manage to excel when they have the opportunity. This opportunity is at the heart of life-changing factor for social and political emancipation of the subject. This perspective is very important make affirmative action to ensure quotas for admission and scholarships aid for maintenance of the student during the course. On August 7, 2012 the Brazilian Senate approved the Law of Quotas, which reserves 50% of seats in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to public school students, also combining criteria ethnic, racial and social. But even before the passage of this law, several HEIs practice affirmative action, such as the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar). We present the history and reflections of a black student periphery that with hard work, dedication and support of affirmative action overcomes his difficulties and forms in higher education.
