INCORPORATING SMARTPHONES INTO AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASSROOM IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Abstract

The article deals with the expediency of using new innovative techniques such as computers, Internet, White boards, tablets and smartphones in foreign language lessons at the present stage of training where the main task of these innovations in edu- cation is the development of the teacher’s ability to motivate the student's actions, to independently navigate the information received, to form creative thinking using the latest advances in science and technology both at lessons and in extracurricular work. It also describes new aspects and trends of Ukraine’s education system and the educational process; The author suggests smartphones as one of the major means of teaching and learning in the article taking into considerations such advantages of using smartphones in learning and teaching as their portability, mobility and ease of use; the increase of learners’ motivation; providing a rich and wider educational environment that enables the effectiveness of the process of assimilating language and speech; possible challenges are grouped and dwelt upon. Different forms of work with this gadget are suggested; Examples of methods for working with smartphones and tasks for the development of foreign language linguistic and speech skills of students with the help of different applications are given. They involve the usage of such functions of smartphones as camera for making video and photos for different educational purposes, calculator, text and voice messages, recording function for warming up, feedback, self and peer evaluation etc. The author suggests using such applications as Twitter, Viber, Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, podcasts and blogging for different educational needs and for the developing learners’ reading, listening, writing and speaking skills, broadening their language competence. The material presented in the article confirms the effectiveness of using smartphones for such flexible learning in an interactive educational environment with content from around the world that provides broad access to the necessary knowledge and mobility of learning.
