LATEST LOANWORDS OF THE POLISH ORIGIN IN MODERN UKRAINIAN: WHIMS OR LANGUAGE NEEDS?

Journal Title: Слов’янський збірник - Year 2015, Vol 0, Issue 19

Abstract

The article considers present-day Polish loanwords functioning in modern Ukrainian language. Adoption of lexical items is permanent in all languages. Today English is the main source of loanwords for the Ukrainian language. However, its leadership does not exclude other sources of loanwords. One of the resources is the Polish language, that has always had direct contacts with the Ukrainian language. Penetration of Polish words into the Ukrainian has always been the subject of thorough research, but penetration of new loanwords from Polish into Ukrainian language is scarcely studied. This determines the relevance of the work. The object of the research are loanwords of the Polish origin, which have quite an abstract meaning and the subject is the analysis of its semantics (in relation to the Polish language) and functioning in modern Ukrainian. Gradual withdrawal of these loanwords outside Western Ukrainian regions shows the real need of the language for these words. This may be a need for naming of the phenomenon (атракція, імпреза), or a need for synonyms for already existing words in the language (під- важувати, відлам, засадничий), or an effect of the least-effort principle (ціка- востка). Penetration into the language can be supported by the existing related words (засадничий). In addition to the loanwords there are structural (цікавинка) and semantic calques (підважувати, відлам)
