Metabolic Syndrome: Definition and Pathophysiology– the discussion goes on!
Journal Title: Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology Advances - Year 2013, Vol 3, Issue 3
Abstract
There are a number of official definitions of Metabolic Syndrome; still there is an ongoing international debate on its existence. Metabolic syndrome is the result of highly complex interplay of a number of risk factors and not a single etiology can be assigned to it. Genetic predisposition and environmental risk factors are responsible for predisposition to the syndrome. The insight into the pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome provide a practical tool to identify patients with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes mellitus type 2. Increased prevalence of the syndrome affecting quarter of the world population, might be a consequence of worldwide obesity epidemic, ageing population and increased insulin resistance.. Identification of metabolic syndrome is a public health strategy to define susceptible people, which may prompt early diagnosis of previously undetected components of metabolic syndrome. Simple life style modifications specifically at the preliminary stage of the syndrome like weight reduction, regular exercise, diet modification, decreasing the effect of insulin resistance by these modifications or drug treatment is promising in decreasing the risk of CVD and type 2 diabetes. This reference article gives a balanced overview of the current knowledge of the various definitions, pathophysiology, genetics and association between different risk factors. Keywords: Pathophysiology, Cardiovascular disease (CVD), Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Risk factors, Genetics.

Effects of Centrally Applied Serotonin in Ventromedial Hypothalamic Nucleus on Regulation of Bile Secretion and Lipid Metabolism in the Rat
Ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMH) is one of the brain regions responsible for regulating gastrointestinal activities and lipid metabolism. Hepatic enzymes and serum lipids are controlled by the central nervous syst...
Experimental Rodent and Human in Vitro-Models for Balanced Activity of Oncogenes and Tumor-Suppressor Genes
Taking in consideration the importance of coordinated oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes activity in the control of malignancies and death, additional copy of oncogene Dcn1 was inserted in mouse embryonic stem cells (m...
The Effect of Various doses of Vitamin C on some Physiological Parameters in Rabbits Following Xylazine Anaesthesia
The effects of various doses of vitamin C on physiological parameters following xylazine anaesthesia was evaluated in rabbits. Thirty six animals were divided into six equal groups (A-F). Groups A and B served as control...
Crude Leaf Extracts of Psidium Guajava Could Potentially be Used in Treatment of Type 1 Diabetes
The antidiabetic potential of Psidium guajava ethanolic leaf extract was investigated in Wistar albino rats. Type 1 diabetes model was induced in the rats using Alloxan monohydrate (120 mg/kg) intraperitoneally. The extr...
Duloxetine Modulates Vincristine-Induced Painful Neuropathy in Rats
Neuropathic pain is a common and severely disabling state that affects millions of people worldwide. Vincristine-induced peripheral neuropathy models showed mixed sensory motor neuropathy. Duloxetine is the first Food an...
