Occurrence of fungi of the genus Alternaria on leaves and siliques of oilseed rape with symptoms of Alternaria black spot

Journal Title: Rośliny Oleiste - Oilseed Crops - Year 2012, Vol 33, Issue 2

Abstract

Alternaria black spot is caused by fungi of the genus Alternaria. Disease symptoms include different types of spots. The aim of the study was to assess composition of the population of fungi of the genus Alternaria on leaves and siliques of oilseed rape with symptoms of Alternaria black spot. The experiments were carried out in the Field Experimental Station of the Institute of Plant Protection – National Research Institute in Winna Góra (Great Poland region) on three cultivars of oilseed rape in the years 2006–2009. In the study two variants were tested – treated with Sportak 450 EC (prochloraz 450 g/l) and untreated. Leaves and siliques with symptoms of Alternaria black spot were collected from both variants. Phytophysiological assessment included three types of symptoms of Alternaria black spot, i.e. spots: concentric (concentrically zoned, grey-brown), non-concentric (irregular, black) and point (small, black spots). Fragments with a respective type of spots were disinfected, washed in distilled water, dried on sterile absorbent paper and placed on PDA medium. After incubation, fungal species were determined. Percentages of individual fungal species in relation to the sum of placed leaf or silique fragments for respective symptom types were calculated. Percentages of individual fungal species differed and depended on spot type, rape cultivar and season. Species the most frequently isolated from leaf spots were A. brassicae and A. alternata. A. alternata was mostly prevalent among the isolates obtained from point and concentric spots on siliques. In all the seasons A. brassicicola accounted for a low percentage of isolates and it was the most frequently isolated from non-concentric spots on leaves and non-concentric and point spots on siliques. A slightly higher number of isolates of species A. brassicae was found on leaves from untreated subjects on average for seasons and cultivars, as well as a higher percentage of cultures of species A. alternata for variants treated with the fungicide.
