THE UNADAPTED WHITE WOMAN

Abstract

In this study, we have tried to present a difficult white - black relationship in an African landscape during the 1940’s. The white woman, Mary Turner, the protagonist of the novel The Grass Is Singing is caught in a life she does not like and in a relationship with her black servant, Moses. She represents the unadapted white woman who hates her life as a married woman and her depression, the incredible African heat and the absence of her husband lead her into a new relationship with a black man that she initially hated.Their relationship changes from master/slave into a new one: slave/master. Even if at the beginning, Mary is in control, she finally becomes the obedient subject of Moses, her black servant.
