The Use of ChatGPT in Higher Education: Students’ Perceptions

Abstract
The rapid development of technology has led to the creation of the artificial intelligence model ChatGPT, which enables the generation of texts based on user queries. Although it represents an innovation in the domain of artificial intelligence, this model is still insufficiently explored through empirical studies. Therefore, a study was conducted to further explore students’ perceptions regarding the use of ChatGPT in higher education. The sample included 200 students from the University of Novi Sad, and the data were analyzed using SPSS and descriptive statistics measures. The research results indicate that students extensively use ChatGPT for academic purposes, recognizing benefits such as time-saving and personalized learning experiences. However, the results also show students’ concerns about the potential reduction of creativity and critical thinking, as well as privacy risks. Additionally, most students had no experience with educational workshops or courses focused on using ChatGPT in an academic context. Based on these findings, it is concluded that there is a need for educating students on a more efficient and responsible use of ChatGPT in higher education. Furthermore, the importance of further research and the development of resources to provide adequate support for students in applying this technological tool is emphasized.
