Utracone i zachowane kościelne księgozbiory warmińskie od XVII do XX wieku

Abstract

The church book collections in Warmia have been attracting a lot of attention, mainly because of the library owned by the canon Nicolaus Copernicus and the library of the Jesuit College in Braniewo. Because of their stormy history, their contents cannot be fully reconstructed. This study is an attempt at a synthesis of the history of losing and conserving books of Warmian origin, focusing mainly on the Swedish invasions of the 17th and 18th centuries and the outcome of World War II. Most of the old book collections of Warmia are now in the Library of the Hosianum Seminary of the Warmia Archdiocese in Olsztyn (330 incunabula, 1,563 16th-century books and over 7,000 books from the 17th and 18th centuries). At least 3,500 books from Warmia are in Sweden and at least a few hundred are in other European public and privately-owned libraries. Therefore, one can suppose that about 15,000 books from the 15th-18th centuries from Warmia have survived to our times.
