VIEWS OF THE UKRAINIAN SCIENTISTS OF THE 30’s OF THE XX th CENTURY ON LINGUISTIC RECONSTRUCTION

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to study the views of the Ukrainian linguists of the 30’s, in particular A. Y. Krymskyi, P. O. Buzuk, Y. K. Tymchenko, K. T. Nemchinov, I. I. Ohienko, M. K. Hrunskyi, V. M. Hanzov, L. A. Bulakhovskyi on linguistic reconstruction. The object of study is a set of scientific texts – works on historical phonetics of Eastern Slavic languages, written by Ukrainian linguists of the 30’s. of the XX century. In accordance with objectives of our research actualistic method is applied. Scientific novelty is presented in a wide variety of linguistic facts from the works on historical phonetics of Eastern Slavic languages. The method of modeling a specific genetic relationship between languages on Indo-European comparative material in the second half of the nineteenth century was caused by the emergence of the model «family tree» by A. Schleicher, who explained the origin of Indo-European languages by means of gradual dialectal fragmentation of the language and was presented in the form of a diagram, resembling a shady tree, and «wave» models by I. Schmidt, who illustrated the idea of gradual transitions from one language group to another and versatility of their relationships. Therefore, along with the «family tree» theory has arisen a theory, based on the principle of linguistic continuity, and which modeled the origin of languages in the form of gradual transitions from one language group to another on the background of close contact (given on the convergence). The Ukrainian linguists of the 30’s of the XX th century had a specific point of view in the aspect of language and its reconstruction. K. T. Nemchinov indicated the existence of East Slavic parent-language. A. Y. Krymskyi acknowledged the existence of «Common Russian language». S. Th. Smal-Stotskyi was skeptical of the parent language. I. I. Ohienko distinguished proto-Slavic language and rejected the existence of parent Russian language and believed that the Ukrainian, Belarussian and Russian languages existed separately. M. V. Hantsov criticized the concept of «Common Parent Russian language» suggested by O. O. Shakhmatov. Further study of such features as chronological factor and localization of linguistic phenomena, language-pattern, causes of linguistic changes seems to be promising.
