MEDICAL EDUCATION FROM ATATURK TO PRESENT

Abstract
ABSTRACT While basic steps of modern medical education was taken by Abraham Flexner Report, it gained a meaning with foundation of the Republic in Turkey. Medical education was made to systematically structure during Dr. Refik Saydam’s ministry of health. The negative political developments between the years 1933-1945 in the world enabled the foreign academicians work in Turkey. The cultural revolution in Turkey was started with the report prepared by Professor Albert Malche for Darülfünun. In this context, Istanbul University, and the first medical school was opened. In accordance with the world trend in this period, discipline-based medical education model was adopted. University of Istanbul was followed by the opening of medical faculties in Ankara, Atatürk, Hacettepe, Ege and Dokuz Eylul University. The establishment of the Higher Education Council at the beginning of the 1980s increased the number of medical school. Numerical increase in the number of physicians with the medical faculties increased, at the same time discussion on how to educate qualified physician increased. The debates about physicians has led to the preparation of a report and establishing of a commission of inquiry in the Parliament in 1990.It was stated in the reports of TBMM and MÖTE on the basis of lack of quality of the graduates as insufficient number of academics, lack of educational resources and training programs which failed to respond to community needs. The development of the education and training of medical schools, improvement, and brought to the international standard level the department of medical education, Ulusal ÇEP, UTEAK and TEGED’s contribution is great. To educate well-qualified doctors being aware of the social responsibilities of their jobs, modernist approaches in the area of medicine are necessary.
