Abstract

Intertextuality was turned into a theory by Julia Kristeva in 1960’s. Literature theoreticians did not make an exact and complete definition of intertextuality. However came to agree that all the texts rewrite previous ones. İn the study first of all it was analyzed what is intertextuality . Then, the animation movie “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” which was written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by Ron Barrett and then adapted to cinema was analyzed in the context of intertextuality. In the sense of scenario, there are some references to events in the Bible in movie. Abstract

Social, political and psychological context of a period may be listed as top three of the major factors determining the writing process and medium. It is generally not possible for an author to isolate himself from the influence of the period in which he lives. The acts and discourse of Mehmet Akif and his contemporaries, who represented a generation which observed the last days of an empire that has maintained its sovereignty for seven centuries, have always dealt with these hard times. Mehmet Akif who was one of the most significant orators during the first years of national struggle and republic, had remained an influential figure for a long time; leading people to the right path through his poems, his writing and even his sermons and discourse. However, having never given up his conservative posture and his integrity, had to move to Egypt following the enlightenment of his homeland for reasons which are controversial even today. Mehmet Akif, who was a reading, thinking, discussing, enlightening and guiding intellectual, continued writing and enlightening during his stay in Egypt. Nevertheless, homesickness, financial difficulties, familial problems and wrongdoings of the Islamic world led him to pessimism. This pessimism was also reflected in both the tone and the content of his poems written in Egypt. This study is to evaluate the poems which Mehmet Akif wrote in Egypt and was included in Gölgeler (Shadows) based on his life. Therefore, this study will deal with and examine the poems of Mehmet Akif, who kept his finger on the social life through his poems, in the light of the poems he wrote in Egypt. As a result, the study will be an attempt to draw conclusions on his state of mind through his poems and on his poems through his living conditions.

Abstract

Muallim Naci is a personality whose contributions to literary World are inarguable with his educator and writer qualifications. He strengthened these contributions in the field of criticism with his writings. But these haven’t prevented him to be the subject of remarkable debates in his period. The opinions which he defended haven’t been understood, polemics overshadowed his literary personality most of the time. Dispute between Recaizade Mahmud Ekrem and Muallim Naci caused him to be described as a conservative “old” supporter, this prejudice has hold on until today. In fact considering his works, it is seen that he is a character of moderation. Naci, although he is not against to innovation, he is the supporter of the idea that all kinds of innovation have to be synthesized with our national identity as much as possible. Abstract

Gülşen-i Vahdet was written by İbrahim Şâhidî of Muğla, also the writer of Tuhfe-i Şâhidî of the canon texts in Ottoman Poetry. The book, appreciated with great interest in its time, was annotated and arranged by many authors and was translated into Arabic and Greek languages. Gülşen-i Vahdet, a mystical mesnevîs consisting of 457 couplets, has a multilayered meaning structure. Pointing the elements related to face in its first layer of meaning, a seyr u sülûk allegory was structured. Accordingly, Zülf (hair), Hatt (beard), Hâl (beauty spot), Çeşm (eye), Ebrû (eyebrow) and Dehen (mouth) representing muvahhid (believing in the God's unity), each is trying to reach Rûy (face) representing the beloved one. During this quest, while discussing and examining each other, they achieve the unity by understanding that Rûy, just as in Mantıku’t-Tayr, is not different from themselves. In this layer of meaning, while combining the elements on “face”, which is one of the most basic concepts of classical Turkish literature, around a story of fiction for the first time, it demonstrates the authenticity of the work. In the second layer of meaning, the work can be taken as Rind-Zâhid conflict. It is stated that “Zülf” represents “Vâmık”; and “Rûy” represents Azrâ in Gülşen-i Vahdet, so the work reminds of love stories with two heroes. In addition to diagnosis and polysemy, Gülşen-i Vahdet fully bears the basics of allegorical works; all listed as internal conflicts, search, well-proportioned, intertextuality, spatiotemporal ambiguity, the author's explanation of the allegory, “he story of the formation of a single work and allegory to continue without interruption. Analyzing the allegorical structure of Gülşen-i Vahdet, this article aims to put forward the meaning world that the work gained in its different layers.

Abstract

John Dos Passos as a modernist writer entertains the reader during telling his stories. In an excellent way he uses camera-eye technique to tell what he grasps in reality. Passos more than a realist novelist shows characters and urban life. In The Three Soldiers, Passos was an ambulance driver in the First World War and mirrors the reality. He is picturing characters feeling, attitudes, flee, wound and ambitions. In Manhattan Transfer, Passos lives the city and reveals his experiences about urban life. He considers city as protagonist and takes its pictures and changes during thirty years. He tells every details of the city like statue of liberty, flag, streets and mechanical inventions. Abstract

Kiran Desai represents a world full of emotional and partly physical sorrow in The Inheritance of Loss. From the very beginning of the novel until the end the feeling of pessimism embraces you. The gloomy atmosphere is embedded in almost all aspects of the novel. The political unstableness, the harsh natural conditions of the territory, the physical and emotional pains of characters lead to a tragic atmosphere. The story mostly takes place at Kalimpong, which lies at the foothill of Himalayas. Kalimpong goes through a political turmoil. The Nepali minority struggle for their rights. However, they do not hesitate to behave unjustly toward other groups during their strife. Both the rebellions and the police oppress the residents of Kalimpong. In this respect, the political instability causes misery in lives of all ethnic groups. Another hardship that the residents face is the climate. During the wet season, the monsoon rains bring alone an unbearable life. Finally, the main cause of pessimism is projected through the lives of characters. From minor to major characters almost all of them represent an unhappy life. All characters experience a sort of tragedy more or less. Inferior treatment, dreams that come nothing, sorrow of love, loss of the beloved ones are some of the themes that compose a pessimist atmosphere through characters of The Inheritance of Loss.

Abstract

Gördüs and its vicinity has been settlement place since ancient times. Gördüs was one of the districts of Saruhan Sanjak and also it is the name of the city in central position of this district. In this period Gördüs district was neighboring to Adala, Demirci, Kayacık districts. In our study characteristics of Gördüs belonging to XVI century such as socio-economic structure, demography, foundation were analyzed in the light of cadastral record books, changes and developments within the century were expressed comparatively. It is seen that the city has 4 streets in 1531 and seven streets in 1575. However, although the number of streets increased, there was a decrease in population which makes us think that the old streets were split up. In the city architectural works such as mosque, prayer room, zawiyah and personnel assigned for these places served in the body of foundations. There was small economic buoyancy in Gördüs city where there is no great economic activity.
