Abstract

This research aimed to publish the characteristics and to test the validity and the effectiveness of module based on REACT to improve students’ critical thinking skills on fungal material at grade X. The development of module based on REACT referred to nine modified steps of Research and Development (R&D) model from Borg & Gall that included: research and information collection, planning, development of initial design of product, initial field test, first product revision, limited field test, second product revision, operational field test, and final product revision. The data analysis used qualitative and quantitative descriptive method. The research results showed that the characteristics of module based on REACT were developed according to syntax of REACT model that was included by indicators of critical thinking; the validity of student module was assessed by material expert at 88.75%, by module presentation expert at 93.44%, by readability expert at 93.75%, and by learning device expert at 92.40% and for the validity of teacher module was assessed by material expert at 94.40%, by module presentation expert at 97.66%, by readability expert at 93.75%, and by learning device expert at 86.46%; scoring average at 98.69% by practitioner and at 81.88% by students; and module based on REACT on fungal material was effective to improve students’ critical thinking skills because there was difference of posttest results between module class and control class (Sig.=0.020 < α=0.05).

Abstract

This research developed a model of cooperative learning by modifying some types (jigsaw, NHT and talking chips) and inquiry based learning model. The purpose of this study to produce a product in the form of new learning model. It was Nobibasisku learning model that tried to increase the activity of students in learning and cooperation within the group, and to develop the social attitudes and the scientific attitude of students. The research and development model used in Nobibasisku was ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development or Production, Implementation or Delivery and Evaluations) model. The validation results for all instruments were categorized as very feasible as follows: a) the design of a model at 84.17%), b) the syllabus draft at 77%, c) the lesson plan at 79.76%, and d) the cognitive assessment instrument in the form of multiple choice posttest at 78.03%. The effectiveness of the learning model were done by limited and extensive tests that each of tests was done in 2 stages for students. The average values of posttest on limited test for stage 1 and stage 2 were at 72.53 at 74.85. On extensive test, the average values of posttest for stage 1 and stage 2 were at 63.80 and at 75.70. Thus, Nobibasisku learning model that was designed was very feasible and effective to be applied for biology learning.

Abstract

This research aimed: 1) to find out the characteristics; 2) to test the feasibility and; 3) to investigate the effectiveness of module based on bounded inquiry lab to improve students’ scientific literacy of content dimension on digestive system material of grade XI. This research used procedure of research and development (R&D) by Borg & Gall (1983) that was modified. Data of students’ scientific literacy of content dimension were analyzed by using normalized N- Gain to investigate the effectiveness of module-based on bounded inquiry lab. The research results showed: 1) the module-based on bounded inquiry lab to improve students’ scientific literacy of content dimension on digestive system material was developed in accordance with the syntax of bounded inquiry lab; 2) the feasibility of module-based on bounded inquiry lab was at very good category; 3) the effectiveness of the developed module-based on bounded inquiry lab was proved by Wilcoxon test that showed the differences in students’s scientific literacy of content dimension between before and after learning by using module-based on bounded inquiry lab with probability (p) of 0.000 (p <0.05), Ho was rejected.

Abstract

This research aimed: 1) to develop an inquiry-based laboratory module, 2) to test the feasibility of an inquiry-based laboratory module, and 3) to test the effectiveness of an inquiry-based laboratory module to improve students’ outcomes on motion system material at class XI of State Senior High School (SMAN) 1 of Mejayan. The development of an inquiry-based laboratory module referred to nine steps of Research and Development (R&D) model from Borg & Gall (1983) that included: 1) research and data collection, 2) planning, 3) product development, 4) initial product test, 5) product revision I, 6) field test, 7) product revision II, 8) operational field test, 9) final product revision. The research results showed: 1) the developed inquiry-based laboratory module on motion system material used the Inquiry Lab syntax (observation, manipulation, generalization, verification, and application), 2) the feasibility of an inquiry-based laboratory module as followed: a) the validation test of material expert at 93.00%, b) the validation of design development expert at 82.90%, c) the validation of tool expert at 95.70%, d) the validation of practitioners (teachers) at 94.00%, and e) the test of small group at 83.82%; and 3) an inquiry-based laboratory module on motion system material was effective to improve students’ outcomes (Sig.=0.000 < α=0.05).

Abstract

Students’ learning outcomes were still relatively low at Celluler Biology Subject because the implementation process of learning was centered on lecturer and stundents found it difficult to understand the subject material. This study aimed to determine the application of learning journal as a tool in the effort to increase students understanding of Celluler Biology concept. The study was conducted at 53 second semester stundents (26 students for class 2A and 27 students for class 2B) of Biology Education Program Study of PGRI Teachers' Training College, Madiun. The study was conducted during three meetings for KD 1-3 (Kompetensi Dasar=Basic Competence) of Celluler Biology Subject. The collected data were the implemented STAD data, the learning journal data and the concept understanding data. The concept understanding data were obtained by giving the quiz questions at the end of learning. The study result showed that the learning with implementation of learning journal increased from first meeting at 13.32 became 13.42 at meeting II and III, and there was the increase of quiz value from each KD on both medium and low categories.

Abstract

The main factor that determined the succesful of learning process was learning method. This research aimed to find out the effect of applaying of concept map method by using macromedia flash to improve students’ learning outcomes at class VII of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Patra Mandiri Plaju. The research design was the pretest-postest non equivalent group design. The population of this research were all students at class VII of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Patra Mandiri Plaju as many as 4 classes, and for the sample were only two classes using cluster sampling technique. T-test was used to test the hyphotesis of this research. The research result showed that there was a significant improvement on students’ cognitive learning outcomes by using concept map method with macromedia flash on Biotic and Abiotic material. It was showed by Ha acceptance and H0 rejection. Beside, the improvement on students’ cognitive learning outcomes also could be showed by gain score average of Experimental Class at 2.73, it was better than gain score average of Control Class at 2.34.

Abstract

This study aimed to compare the learning outcomes between TAI model with Power Point and TAI model with comic at SMP Negeri 3 Kartasura 2011/2012. The method used in this study was "The Static group pretest-posttest design" with additional control class. Sampling technique used cluster random sampling includes VIIIG experiment class I (TAI with Power Point), VIIIA experimental class II (TAI with media comics), and VIIIE control class. Data analysis technique used the validity, reliability, normality test, homogeneity, and ANOVA. The results of hypothesis examination by using alpha (5%) showed Fcalculation =7.191 while Ftable=3,082. If Fcalculation 7.191> 3.082 Ftable then H0 was rejected. This meant there were significant differences among three study groups. Based on results of post hoc it could be concluded that biology learning outcomes using TAI model with Power Point (87) was better than TAI model with comic (81) and control class (80). Affective results were based on questionnaire score of each student. Affective outcomes showed as much as 91.10% of students got A, and 8.10% of students got B for the class of Power Point.

Abstract

The aims of this research were 1) to develop a textbook-based SSCS model on environmental change material, 2) to test the feasibility of a textbook-based SSCS model, and 3) to test the effectiveness of a textbook-based SSCS model to improve the critical thinking skill of students at class XI of State Senior High School (SMAN) 2 of Metro. The development model used in this research was ADDIE model consisted of five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The data were collected by using the validated questionnaire and the pretest-posttest test and were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The data of the critical thinking skill were analyzed by sample paired t-test and calculated by normalized N-gain. The result of the development of a textbook showed the average results of the expert validation was 93% (very feasible for use as students teaching material). The result of respond of the students was 82.2%, it meant that the students gave the positive responses to the developed textbook. The scores of posttest were 78.9 (experimental class) and 68.6 (control class). The result of paired t-test was tcalculated (5.26) > ttab (2.02), it showed that mean of students’ N-gain in experiment class had the significant difference to the control class. Therefore, there was significant effect of the use of a textbook-based SSCS model to improve the the critical thinking skill of students.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the critical thinking skill of student of biological teacher candidate in order to prepare the 21st century generation. The research was done on animal physiology material at one of Private Universities in Palembang City, even semester. The research method used was descriptive with quantitative approach. The sampling technique used was random sampling. The instrument of critical thinking assesment was obtained by the essay test refered to 6 critical thinking skills according to Facione (2013) with its each sub skill and the question guide that refered to critical thinking ability. The result showed that the critical thinking skills of student of biological teacher candidate had the different scores and criteria on each skill. The skill of interpreting, concluding and evaluating had scores 78.18, 84.17 and 84.29 respectively with good criteria. The analyzing and explaining skills had 66.06 and 57.78 respectively with enough criteria, whereas the self-regulating skill had 42.78 with very less. The critical thinking skill is very important to be possessed by student of biological teacher candidate as the provision of efforts to prepare the 21st century generation that are capable of competitiveness and can solve the various challenges in future.

Abstract

This research purpose was to get the understanding of biology teachers’ understanding at SMA Negeri about curriculum 2013 in Ilir Barat 1 District of Palembang City. The method used was descriptive qualitative. The data analysis technique used was descriptive percentation. The samples of this research were 20 biology teachers at SMA Negeri in Ilir Barat 1 District of Palembang City. In general, the average value of the understanding test results about curriculum 2013 was 67 and was in good category. The result of the analysis of teachers’ lesson plan with scientific approach concept had an average value at 96.6 (very good category). The concept of authentic assessment has an average at 64 (category enough). The concept of learning model evalution had an average value at 24 (very poor category). Based on the research result, it could be concluded that the understanding of iology teachers’ understanding at SMA Negeri about curriculum 2013 in Ilir Barat 1 District of Palembang City was in good category.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the metacognitive skill of stuedents of teacher candidate in plant ecology subject at University of Muhammadiyah Palembang and to analyze its relationship with lecture’s learning system. The research method used was mixed quantitative-qualitative approach (mixed methods). The technique sampling used was simple random sampling. The instrument used for measurement of metacognitive skill was the essay test integrated by cognitive learning outcomes and lecturer’s interview sheet. The result showed that the average score of students’ metacognitive skill who attended the plant ecology subject was 37,97. Then, the result also showed that there was a relationship between student metacognitive skill and lecture’s learning system. The learning system applied by the lecturer in plant ecology subject was not based on the certain learning model yet, and was not paid attention to the differences in students' academic ability yet. Therefore, it did not support the empowerment of student metacognitive skills.

Abstract

This development research aimed to determine: (1) the feasibility of assessment instrument to measure the science process skills of high school students in terms of test standard characteristics and (2) how the level of assessment instrument mastery to measure the science process skills of high school students. The development procedure used in this study was by using 4-D model that was found by Thiagarajan; define, design, develop, and disseminate. The instruments used in collecting the data were questionnaires, interview, and multiple choice questions reasoned. The technique for analyzing the data used in this study was qualitative analysis by using Aiken's V statistics and quantitative analysis by using QUEST program. The results of this study were (1) assessment instrument to measure the process skills of high school students where could be categorized as effective from test standard characteristic namely the matching of question items with INFIT MNSQ was 0.86 until 1.29. The reliability was 0.80 and the difficulty level was -1.47 until 1.59 consisted of 3 categories: 11 items of easy question, 7 items of medium questions, and 5 questions of difficult question. (2) The percentage of assessment instrument mastery level science process skills of high school students in high level was 76.64%, medium category was 73.71%, and poor level was 70.12%.

Abstract

This research aimed to improve the social skill and the cognitive achievement of students through the implementation of Think Pair Share model. This type of research was PTKLS (Classroom Action Research based on Lesson Study). This study was conducted at two cycles. The subject of this research was the students who were studying Curriculum Design material as many as 18 persons. They were consisted of 2 male students and 16 female students. The results showed that Think Pair Share Learning Model could improve students’ social skill and cognitive achievement on Curriculum Design material. Students’ social skill showed the increase in scores from the first cycle to the second cycle. The average score of social skill at the first cycle was 72.00, while at the second cycle was 76.55. This learning model could also improve the cognitive achievement, from the first cycle (79.13) to the second cycle (79.29).

Abstract

This study aimed to develop the instrument of psychomotor assessment in biological outdoor practicum. The development method in this research was ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The instrument of psychomotor assessment was for practicum on ecosystem material. The execution of research and development of this instrument was begun with a preliminary study, and continued with initial development that was validated by relevant experts and tested on class X in SMA Negeri 2 Metro to find out the feasibility of using psychomotor assessment. The next stage was the multiplication of instrument for large-scale test. Based on the research conducted, the final result of this study fulfilled the criteria for dissemination. The result of study (the instrument) is expected to be useful for teachers in psychomotor assessment biological outdoor practicum.
