Abstract

Some urban wastewater resulted from domestic and industrial wastewater and needs special treatments before discharge to surface water or used for irrigation. This study is target to use kaolin (from south Egypt) as adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals as well as aeration and alum for the removal of nutrients from Kima drain wastewater .The experiment proceeds through 3 steps, the first step applied the aeration method for 24,48,120 and 192 hr and obtained the suitable time to remove or reduce the nutrients. Second step includes treatment with alum [KAl(SO4)2.12H2O] using different alum doses (50,100 &150 mg/l) at the obvious times to remove or reduce the nutrients , while the third one includes treatment with kaolin ore size <63 ?m at different doses, pH and times to remove heavy metals. The results revealed that aeration method removed CO3 ,OH and Mn ions , and reduced pH, Ca,Cl, NO2, SiO2, PO4, Na and Fe concentrations. Treatment with alum was effective for the removal of CO3,OH, NO3,PO4 ions and reduced Cl, F, Na, Cd, Cu, Cr, Sr, and Zn . Kaolin ore was very effective as adsorbent for reduced and removal of the heavy metals Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sr and Zn from the wastewater. Using the three consecutive treatment processes ,we obtained wastewater in the range of standardized limits for discharge into surface water or used in irrigation as cited by Egyptian Authorities.

Abstract

The aim of the present paper is to study the efficiency of a new process for wastewater treatment by adsorption onto micro-particles of dry plant using the batch equilibration technique. These micro-particles are obtained from grinded and dried Carpobrotus edulis plant. The results show that the micro-particles of C. edulis plant present a good retention of heavy metals, nitrate and phosphate ions from real wastewater. This retention increased with increasing of contact time. The removal percentage of heavy metals from industrial wastewater by C. edulis particles was 94 % for Cd(II), 91 % for Cu(II), 99 % for Pb(II) and 98% for Zn(II). The maximum adsorption capacity was depending on the type of ions (atomic weight, ionic radius and structure…). The results indicate that the chemical oxygen demand (COD) values decrease after contact with micro-particles of dry C. edulis plant. The results obtained are compared with those obtained from -i) distilled water and -ii) from laboratory solutions with various concentrations. These results indicate that the micro-particles obtained from grinded and dried C. edulis plant could be used for removal of heavy metals and pollutant minerals from wastewater.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Many events daily happen in workplaces that resulted in the death and injury. Such incidents are often caused because of the failure to identify potential hazards, assess and provide control solutions. Therefore, many events can be prevented by identifying potential hazards, assessing and providing control solutions. The aim of this study is the risk assessment of oxygen plant machines by HAZOP and What if methods in Sanandaj Besat hospital and comparison of these methods with each other and selection of superior technique. Methodology: In this study, the risks involved in oxygen generating machine were identified by using HAZOP method in 9 nodes and by what if method in 12 nodes. With regard to the protective system, number of risk was determined and number of secondary risk was obtained by providing control solutions. At the end, the data collected was analyzed by the two mentioned techniques. Findings: The results showed that 177 risks were in 12 nodes related to what if method (more than 80% risks) among the 220 risks identified that 9 risks (5%) tolerable, 123 risks (69.4%) with unsuitable conditions and 45 risks (25.4%) were intolerable, and 26.4% of risk control solution with high costs, 41.4% of risk control solution with average costs and 32.2% of risk control solution were with low costs. 43 risks were in 9 nodes related to HAZOP method (less than 20% risks) that 2 risks (4.6%) tolerable, 31 risks (72%) with unsuitable conditions and 10 risks (23.2%) were intolerable, and 39.2% of risk control solution with high costs, 40.5% of risk control solution with average costs and 20.3% of risk control solution were with low costs. Conclusion: Although the number of potential risks identified in what if method was more than the HAZOP method and more percentage of intolerable risks was controlled by what if method to the HAZOP method with low cost, and complexity, time and cost required for assessment with HAZOP method were more than the what if method, it is suggested that at least several methods to be used to identify risks, because identification and assessment of risks by a method is not sufficient.
